Time to Chill at the Underwood
“Understated savvy” are the words that might best sum up this little bar that straddles the Chueca/Gran Via divide. Most bars fail by trying too hard or, conversely, hardly trying – the Underwood takes the middle ground. They don’t impose “sophistication” via exotic themes, nor do they leave you squinting under florescent lights ankle deep in wadded napkins. The bar simply creates a comfortable environment in which to enjoy your existing friends and possibly broaden the circle a bit.
If you’ve already been through your Malasaña or Chueca phase
and are ready to downshift from mega-watt music and crushing crowds, the
Underwood is for you. The folks are stylish but not pretentious, friendly but not eager – a nice mix of men, women, gay and straight.
A small bar curves through the front room and minimalist lamps spindle from the ceiling. The chill-out music remains in the background knowing better than to protrude on conversation.
Although the venue isn’t large, it offers fours separate environments. The three other rooms vary the chill out theme – one with scooped seats, another with small tables and ambient lighting and still another with more energetic music and wall projections. Something for everyone.
Next time you are standing in a littered noisy bar face to face with your friends but still having to shout at the top of your lungs, ask yourself, “Why aren’t I at the Underwood?”
