The Wurlitzer Ballroom Madrid – Rock’n'roll Afterhours

So you’re walking up the Gran Via at around three or four in the morning when your buddy asks you, “Is there any place open with good music?”

You give him the “I know a place” look, buy some beer in the street off some Chinese guys, turn a corner and enter a massive sea of Betty Page haircuts, goatees, leather pants, dirty Converse shoes, mullets, ripped jeans, ringer t-shirts, etc.

Your buddy squeezes his eye to get a look at the front door.“Hey, there’s no sign….”

“Of course not,” you reply,” this is the Wurlitzer.

The Wurlitzer Ballroom, to be precise. Tucked in between Sol and Gran Via, the Wurlitzer is the ideal spot for those who like to dance to ANYTHING but the stuff they’re playing at the discos. It’s a place for people who LIKE music. A place where you hear Aretha Franklin, Guns’n'Roses, The Dead Boys, MC5, Marvin Gaye, Twisted Sister, and The Sonics within the same 30-minute timeframe.

Though the line to get in is long, a Chinese guy works his way up and down it, keeping you supplied with beer, rice, and noodles. In fact, there’s so much beer and hashish in the line, you almost forget that the party is INSIDE.

Finally, you make it to the entrance. Your buddy pulls out his wallet and asks you, “What’s the charge to get in?”

“Charge?,” you reply as you are ushered inside by the doorman, slamming instantly into a wall of sound, your ears tuning in to “The Time Warp” from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Through the thick air of cigarette smoke, you see hordes of drunken youth “jumping to the left” and “taking a step to the right.”

Your friend says “cool,” just before you both put your hands on your hips.
