When "Video killed the radio star" this wasn’t the
first instance of carnage in the world of art. New mediums and
technologies always rival old – usually challenging and enhancing, not killing.
A classic example is painting versus photography. Why slave for
months capturing an image on canvas when some wise guy with some new-fangled
mechanism can do it with the click of a shutter.
The Museo Thyssen Bornemisza explores this topic through a
particular case study: Otto Dix and Hugo Erfuth. The two met in Dresden in 1920 just
after Dix had returned from a several-year tour in WWI. He struck up a
relationship with Erfuth, the older and more established photographer, and the mutual
influence altered both of their artistic trajectories.
In addition to examples of both men’s work, the curators
have provided background material such as sketches. A visit to the museum
will heighten an appreciation of the work not only in terms of aesthetic
considerations but cultural/historical context as well.
