“Without liberty there are no decisions.”

“Without decisions, no one guilty.”

“Don’t rebuke me for my silence.”

“It wasn’t me who decided to silence myself.”

“Others decided to shut me up.”

These five phrases describe the play Silenciados (The Silenced) and you won’t hear much else. Silenciados is the story of five people killed (silenced) because of sexual discrimination. The title was chosen for another reason as well: the characters have literally been silenced and the play is acted without words – a fine example of teatro corporal or physical theatre. Through a combination of dance and bodily expression, the actors express their feelings of oppression and their search for liberty and acceptance .

Silenciados is actually five separate stories, tied together through a common theme of sexual discrimination. For instance, Prisoner 1895 is in Auschwitz, caught in a Pink Triangle. Octavio Acuna is a gay activist, killed in a small town in 2004. Jesús Prieto is a gay Christian who is struggling with his religious and sexual identity. Paulina is a Guatemalan transsexual, and, finally, we meet Mateo Rodriguez, a victim of bullying.

Silenciados is a story of gay men, but the underlying message is universal. It’s the human tale of abuse of power, struggle against injustice and ignorance, and, finally, finding self-acceptance and the acceptance of others. The universal subject matter as well as the added complexity of storytelling without words makes Silenciados well worth seeing.
