For a band whose name that translates as “Boy and Gun”,
Galecia-based rock band, Niño y Pistola, is surprisingly melodic. The quartet consists of two acoustic guitars,
a bass, and a drum kit. A very basic
line up considering the European tendency to have at least one (if not
multiple) forms of electronics within their music.
“It’s kinda our
thing;” said front man Manolito. “it
requires the band to rely on harmony and melody and not electronic sounds.”
Niño y Pistola proved this to be
correct over the evening. Based on the
basic five open chords of the guitar, their music uses the same tried and true
formula which has been used to make phenomenal pop songs for decades. While at first it may seem simplistic, creating
music like this, in many ways, is much more difficult than using electronics
because it leaves the songs naked and obvious of any error.
Niño y Pistola create a dynamic sound by optimizing the use
of varied tempos and dramatic transitions from minor to major chord
structures. And, the best part, lead
singer Manolito’s vocal lines: hypnotic and circular, with a pop-perfect contagion
that may cause epidemic success.
Also factoring in on their potential
success is the fact that they sing in English as well. The band says as children they grew up
listening to The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, etc. “We were lucky,” they said, in reference to
their parents good taste in music. Currently
when listening to music, they favor American and British pop - it only seems
natural for them to sing in English. Manolito
added that English is a much easier language to play with words - Spanish can
be very strict on pronunciation.
Niño y Pistola have just finished
recording a new disc which is titled, “Culbera”; however, they have recently
switched labels and are now signed with Astro Discs and a release date is yet
to be finalized. The album will be
available on their website www.ypistola.com,
and itunes. But, they’d rather you steal
the record than not own it giving the
thumbs up to all the pirates out there.
