Every February and Sept. Madrid is en vogue. It’s an exhilarating
time in Spanish fashion as Madrid
hosts a series of high profile fashion events. The two biggest events are The
Pasarela Cibeles (Cibeles) Feb (11-15); a series of runway shows from Spain´s
top designers and Salon International Moda de Madrid (SIMM) Feb 15-17, an
international fashion trade show. These two events combined with series of
smaller runway shows; make February an exciting time to be in Madrid.
Pasarela Cibeles is a platform for promoting Spanish fashion
and showcasing the most influential of Spanish designers. This season
Fall/Winter 2008 Cibeles celebrates its 47th season, with its biggest showing
of designers ever, 37, including a guest designer from Brazil.
Attending are editors of the top Spanish Fashion magazines, stars of Spanish
television and film, socialites, and anyone lucky enough to score an invite to
this ultra exclusive event.
Although Cibeles may seem like a strictly Spanish event, it
influences worldwide fashion trends. In 2006, Cibeles shot to international
prominence when the organizers were the first to ban ultra thin models sparking
a worldwide debate in forcing the international fashion community to look at
their own policies. Following Cibeles, the fashion councils for Milan and London
introduced their own bans.
While Cibeles is a somewhat elitist party for fashion
insiders SIMM also know as (La Semana de Moda) is a huge international trade
show for fashion’s rank and file. Last year it attracted 800 exhibitors from
over 30 countries; in attendance were 16,800 fashion professionals 2000 of
which came from outside of Spain.
SIMM represents the commercial side of fashion industry.
Buyers from smallest boutiques to the biggest department stores give the “yay”
or “nay” to designers/manufacturer’s latest offerings. They do so by visiting
showroom after showroom and watching runway shows. By the end of SIMM, the
clothes that we’ll we be wearing come Fall 2008 will be selected.
Cibeles and La Semana de Moda tend to dominate the fashion
calendar, but there are a slew of other smaller industry events that take place
throughout the fashion months. For upcoming Spanish talent there is The Ego of
Pasarela de Cibeles (Jan31-Feb2) - a Cibeles Jr, for promising new designers.
SIMM sponsors La Pasarela de Latino América Fashion (Feb 16-17) highlighting
the best designers of Latin America. There are
many small boutiques that take advantage of the favorable timing and have their
own fashion shows as well. Although it’s not fashion event , IBERJOYA, Feb (
14-18), an international trade exposition of fine jewelery, is an important
indicator in trends for fashion accessories. During IBERJOYA the latest in
jewelry and watches are unveiled; these trends in turn influence accessories
that we wear everyday.
For the fashion savvy this February in Madrid is pure heaven. From the glamorous
Pasarela de Cibeles, nut and bolts SIMM, an International Jewelry Exposition
along with countless runway shows from Spanish and international designers make
this month an exciting time for industry insiders as well as those of us who
just love clothes.
