Jobs

They say that in Spain people don't live to work, they work to live–and nothing could be more true. Though it seems humanly impossible, often you'll strike up a conversation in a bar with a Spaniard at 2:00AM on a Tuesday night who will tell you, "I should only stay out a couple more hours. After all, I have to work in the morning!"

But while a certain "Seize The Day" attitute seems prevalent among Spaniards, it certainly does not mean they work less than in other countries. Spaniards put in just as many, if not more hours than their British and American counterparts (though often for much less money). The difference that is most apparent for Americans and Brits working in Spain, is the importance Spaniards give to interpersonal relationships in the workplace, as Spaniards will often sacrifice work over family and personal relationships (the opposite seems to be true in Anglo societies, where it's expected that one can miss important family events or be generally unavailable due to work considerations).

Spaniards are pleasant to work with, eager-to-please, and have a healthy sense of humour devoid of biting sarcasm. Spaniards never seem to forget that "a job is just a job" and not something which defines a person. In fact, rarely in social situations does someone ask you what you do for a living–it just doesn't matter (though as a foreigner in Spain, people will ask you what you are doing here, just out of curiosity).

If you've decided to look for a job in Spain, you've embarked on an exciting path which hopefully reminds you what you are working for in the first place–to live!
