The summer season is approaching at light speed and it’s time for the outdoor music festivals to begin! Get ready: in a small town near Granada on May 16-18, the Rocket Festival lands.

Located in the heart of Andalucia, where English expats and Spaniards live side by side, the Rocket aims to blend the UK alternative festival culture with the Spanish zest for fiesta. With eleven venues featuring music, visual art, sculpture, street performers, and extreme athletes, it’s much more than a music festival; it is a three-day celebration of the alternative lifestyle, the arts, and… intergalactic space travel? I’ll explain later.

Let’s start with the location. The Rocket is held in Alhama de Granada a small Andalusian town that has escaped by the overdevelopment that plagues Coastal areas. It’s a town rich in history, with structures representing the various epochs in Spain: 1st century Roman bridge, Roman baths, an Arab castle, and 16th century nunnery. Of no historical value however, but a lot of fun are the therapeutic hot springs - a festival-goer favorite.

Staying true to the theme of “blending cultures”, the headlining acts are authentically British and unequivocally Spanish. Performing on the main stage, Coldcut, from the UK, are innovators in the electronic scene. They were the first to introduce sampling to UK radio, and 20 plus years, they are still innovating mixing rap, electronica, and rock.

Representing Spain on the main stage, are Muchachito Bombo Infierno (Infernal Little Bass Drum Guy) and his band. This little guy with the big name is one of the most exciting live acts in Spain – an irresistible mix of Spanish guitar, swing and ska. Next up is Bad Manners; they are an English 2 Tone ska revival band. And more than just a name, “bad manners” is an attitude; their lead singer’s antics got them banned from the BBC’s Top of the Pops. Los Delinquentes, hail from Jerez they infuse impish charm with comedy, flamenco, and indie rock.

Occupying the dance tent is a host of UK based Djs, spinning everything from drum and bass, techno, and funky house, to minimal. Other music venues showcase Tribal Funk, an outdoor dance area, and a Radio Disturbo and Toys, a club area.

If you tire of the music, there is no shortage of activities. Watch circus, cabaret and street performers in the Teatro la Libertad. Enjoy sculpture and art in the Sculpture and Twisted Art area. Relax in the Natural Living Area offering: massage, crystal therapy, and all sorts of new age fun. Peruse the market area and buy local and international craftwork, along with food specialties. Exercise your right to be extreme in the “Extreme Area”, complete with ramps and half pipes. Finally, the Rocket is family friendly, so there is even a kid’s area.

One of the more interesting aspects of the festival is the main bar, the Catina Galactica. Apparently the organizers extended the concept of “blending” to extra-terrestrial cultures as well. Here’s the story. A group of forward-thinking artists has looked to the future to see themselves living on another planet. They build a rocket, and land on a new planet, but they aren’t alone. So, they throw a party! The Catina Galactica is born. In a scene straight out of Star Wars, you are served, entertained and surrounded by aliens, robots, Jedis, and bounty hunters. In addition, on Saturday, May 17, everyone gets to join in on the fun, as there is a fancy dress theme, with prizes for the best costume. Interestingly enough, the Rocket does not explicitly ban drug use.

Start the summer with a blast at the Rocket Festival! Picture your self in sun-drenched Andalucia, surrounded by centuries of Spanish history. Next, you head of the Rocket, and are entertained by circus and street performances, massaged, and enlightened by the artistry of the various sculptors.

At night, the headliners take the main stage you are treated to the infectious beats from likes of Coldcut, and awed by the live show of Muchachito Bombo Infierno. When the night is done, you find yourself bathing in the hot springs with the cutie that you just met at the festival. Sounds like the beginning a beautiful summer. Just remember intergalactic travel not necessary, just fun! Click here to get tickets.
