Attractions, monuments, and landmarks in Madrid and the rest of Spain

Attractions

Madrid and its outlying ares are full of fun attractions, museums, landmarks, and monuments. Whether you are a history buff, thrill seeker, or aficionado of architecture. Below you'll find a few of our favorites (to be expanded shortly):

The Royal Palace (pictured above). The palace is the official residence of the King of Spain (though he does not actually reside there). Today this magnificent structure, the largest building in Madrid, is mainly used to host official ceremonies.

The Triangle of Art.
"The Triangle of Art" in Madrid has traditionally referred to the Reina Sofía Museum, El Prado museum, and The Thyssen-Bornemisa Museum, all of which are found within a short walking distance from each other, forming a "triangle." A brand new addition to the Triangle Of Art zone opened in March 2008: The Caixa Forum. If you had time for only one museum, go to El Prado. This is one of the most famous museums in the world and home to works of the great Spanish painters. The Renia Sofia houses contempary art, as dos the Museo Thyssen Bornemisza. The Caixa forum is a bit more multi-use with art exhibitions, cinema screenings, concerts, and debates.

Plaza Mayor and Puerta de Sol. Over the years, the Plaza Mayor or “Main Square” of Madrid has held court to bullfights, public executions, and the Spanish Inquisition’s ‘autos de de.” These days the plaza is a less violent venue, offering concerts and culturalperformances. When there’s nothing “official” going on, you can always enjoy one of the many restaurants or shops found along the plaza’s walls.

Just down Calle Mayor (Mayor Street) from Plaza Mayor you'll come across Puerta del Sol, the center of Madrid and official "Kilometer Zero" beginning point for the Spanish highway system. Several famous Spanish landmarks and monuments can be found here such as the Tio Pepe sign, the statue of the Oso y Madroño, and much more.

El Escorial. Day trip from Madrid. A World Heritage Site, El Escorial was at one time simultaneously a monastery and a royal palace. The monastery is extremely impressive, especially it´s library, but the main attraction is the Pantheon Of Kings: a vault containing twently-six marble sepluchers which hold the remains of Spanish Monarchs.
