Jelly Fish Cafe
OK, promise that when I say “Ocean theme” your mind won’t conjure hideous images of Little Mermaid mosaics and fish-net strewn walls. As improbable as it may seem, this time-worn theme can be done not only with subtlety and elegance, but with the fashion-forward style you’ve come to expect from the Alonzo Martines/ Chueca neighborhood.
One of the newer arrivals on the scene, Jelly Fish, does just this. With minimalist décor that suggests rather than advertises its intentions, lamps allude to aquatic life-forms, lighting is delicately hued blue, and the art tastefully echoes this same underwater imagery.
However, we all know that “elegance” if gone unchecked can run rampant and acquire a oppressiveness all it’s own – Jelly Fish, clever to the core, has avoided this trap as well. The down-to-Earth owners and staff, have cultivated a scene that “keeps it very real”. The DJs Thursday -Saturday spin everything from chill-out to jazz to Bosa Nova and always at a volume that encourages conversation. The cocktails are all under 7 euros and include refreshing Mojitos, hardy bloody Marys, and a Jelly Fish Drink that successfully blends Ron de coco with melon flavors.
An assortment of classic Spanish tapas in generous portions is an excellent compliment and, if your hunger necessitates, there is a full restaurant downstairs. Here the lunch menu is 9 euros and dinners average 20-30 euros.
The next time you are looking for a compromise between Madrid’s thumping discos and a night at home, give Jelly Fish a spin.
