The dates of the festival aren’t set in stone but the majority of the activities are concentrated between the 14th and 18th. Since its inception in 1948, the celebration has become enormous encompassing everything from music to theater, but at its core it’s the celebration of this peasant saint. Traditionally it’s a day to take the pilgrimage to the Ermita de San Isidro, an 18th century chapel, to drink of its healing waters. For the occasion, many Madrileños...

Sorry for the delay in updating the blog. No kidnap story just lots of work, some travelling and not much play time L Since the last entry things have been coming to fruition. We all knew Madrid would win the league and expected Barcelona to implode but the 4-1 at the Bernabeu was particularly impressive/pathetic depending on what side of the fence you’re looking from. Madrid are playing with real composure, a nice tempo and have the closest thing to real team spirit that I have seen since I came to the capital 3 and a half years ago. Schuster is a canny and clear thinking coach and I expect them to become a European force again next year with the addition of a couple of players – Villa more likely than C Ronaldo imho.
Coming onto Barça - Well this has been coming for a while but I have to admit the scale of the capitulation surprised me. Guardiola has his work cut out for him now and things might well get worse before they get better. Firstly he needs to jettison the underperforming egos asap.
Congrats to Atleti who I think might have a good run in the CL next year if they can somehow hold on to Aguirre. And out of Zaragoza, Osasuna and Recre my money’s on Zaragoza to drop but it will add intrigue to the last jornada of the year... Bring on next year!

Castizo drinking San Isidro spared himself the fuss of bringing a corkscrew and glasses to his picnic in order to enjoy his wine: he simply filled a bag before leaving home.
For real castizo drinking use a bota - a bag made from goatskin and lined with bitumen (really!). No glass needed, because you will drink directly from the bag. The real trick is not to touch the nozzle with your mouth while drinking: lift up the bag untill it is higher than your mouth, hold the nozzle with one hand and squeeze the bag a bit with your other hand so your wine trickles in your mouth. No need to say you should start close to your mouth and gradually lengthen the distance between bota and head for that real San Isidro spirit.
