If the
beautiful lights and abstract Christmas trees around Madrid
haven’t inspired enough holiday cheer, consider a trip to the Centro
Cultural de la Villa de Madrid
for this week’s Festival of Gospel & Negro Spirituals.

The
Festival, in its 13^th year, is being sponsored by Caja Madrid and represents a
collaborative effort between the cultural center, Obra Social, and the Madrid
Ayuntamiento’s art council. The series began this past weekend with an homage
to Mahalia Jackson, whose resonant voice is considered among the most powerful
in the gospel genre.

Friday’s
show will feature Christmas songs by Marlena Smalls and The Hallelujah Gospel
Choir, Saturday’s event brings New Orleans to Madrid with the Joyful
Gospel Choir, and the festival concludes Sunday with the Golden Gate Quartet.

All
concerts are at the Centro Cultural de la Villa de Madrid and start at 20:30
(except for Sunday’s concert which will begin at 19:30).

The price
of admission for each concert is 25 Euros.
