Gay Bars in Madrid: Oui

Bar reviews, Nightclub reviews — By on December 3, 2008 1:00 am

Oui is retro refinement in Malasaña (so add a bit of kitsch to the mix).

Oui feels clean and warm, like a Victorian-era study underwent a radical makeover of its philosophy.  A clean alternative to many places open till 3AM in Malasaña, this rather large bar is a bit hidden, off Calle del Pez, a street popular for cheap cañas and alternative fashions.  Oui’s music- mostly electronica- is superior to places similar in size and category (La Vía Láctea, Freeway) with rotating deejays who mix things that will tickle your fancy.

Oui has a dramatic staircase entry that leads you through a beaded curtain onto the dance floor, which wraps around what I assume is a central patio.  The interior has a 1950s décor- clean lines and streamlined furniture- and also a mid-century feel, since the waiters often wear clothing evoking the era.  Fake fern-like plants hang from the ceiling of one bar, while at the other on the other side of the patio, they rest in glasses on the bar.  Small couches, love seats and armchairs are strategically located throughout the bar. Projected designs play on the wall next to the bathroom, which has a common space allowing the boys’ and girls’ rooms to meet.  The heavy-duty hand dryers, coupled with the trough-style shared urinal in the boys’ room, lend Oui some authenticity and quirk.

And the hook-up factor?  OK.  But who cares?  Oui is so clean, stylish and uniquely fun you’ll forget to look for a boyfriend.

The beverages are normally priced.  And no cover charge means you can drink more once inside!
