Chueca’s Best Gay Cafe – Sexy Staff, Mellow Vibe and Free Cookies!
Bar reviews — By admin on May 27, 2008 12:00 amPeople who know Chueca well will tell you that, of all the hang outs, D’mystic has the friendliest waiters. While other cafes/bars boast staff with astronomical body parts and egos to match, this homey little café always manages to hire the cute, friendly, boy-next-door types – don’t get me wrong, there are some pretty astronomical body parts happening here, too – just sans egos.
This café by day/bar by night, sits just off the Plaza de Chueca, but manages to sidestep the neighborhood’s often frenetic vibe. Walls with rustic brick ooze mortar creating a grounded, homey feel; indirect lighting strikes a relaxed tone; and large street-facing windows let sun in preventing all this earthiness from becoming oppressive. In short, a beautiful balance.
But D’mystic excels not just with sexy staff and a cozy environment, the spectrum of drinks is truly impressive: each table comes with at least five mini menus – one devoted entirely to chocolate drinks! Other menus include ice teas, frapachinos, shakes, and granizados (crushed ice drinks) – almost all beverages are in the three to four euro range and usually come with… a complementary cookie!
The crowd, not surprisingly, is largely gay men in the 20 to 40 range. No particular clique dominates “un poco de todo” as the Spanish say. Good-looking and fit is the only generalization that can be made – OK, add to that: men who are partial to cookies. All in all, a friendly crowd with a fair amount of regulars.
Most tables are two tops allowing you to relax solo, with a friend or, by simply pulling the tables together, hanging out en masse. During the day, the friendly vibe and the flexible seating arrangement makes it a good place to read or study, but by night, of course, is a different story.
At night, the café maintains is candor, but is often packed. The scene is early night – the post-dinner, pre-club shift – busiest from 22:00 to 2:00. A great place to start your weekend adventure.
