Chemical Brothers Conquer Madrid
“We are the Night”, the latest album/tour by The Chemical Brothers rocked Arena Madrid this past Sunday. Although the CD has gone a bit under the radar, hundreds of ecstatic fans braved the cold night to turn out. The doors opened early and the crowd stormed the venue.
We were welcomed by the sounds of dj James Holroyd who kicked in with
some quality soulful house at 124 bpm (my personal favorite). This got the masses riled for the coming
attraction. As the set progressed, the
bass lines got thicker, the beat faster, and the dancing more reckless.
Next, the dimming lights left the crowd choking with anticipation until
the time came… “to push the button” (is that a clever song reference or what?).
The music shot through the crowd, but what really turned heads was the flash of
the first visual – after a collective gasp, the we-are-in-for-a-ride
feeling set in.
From this stellar beginning, the show didn’t let up: the session spanned
the spectrum from oldies like “Out of control” to newer tracks like “Do it
again”. The entire concert was built on
a stunning audiovisual choreography of pumping beats, strobing
lights, ricocheting lasers and lots of outrageously funka-delic imagery.
After the Brothers left the stage, the crowd demanded an encore, which
included the classic “Block Rockin’ Beats” and ended with a guitar-like beat
machine solo that left the darkened mosh pit screaming for more. Sadly when
the lights came back on, the Bros had left the building. Oh well, until the next tour.
