Comedian Craig Hill is in Madrid!

It’s finally the weekend and a friend asks, “What are you doing?” You respond by saying, “maybe Friday a little botellon in the streets, and Saturday a concert, and Sunday? Well, what’s there really to do on Sunday in Madrid?”

Every weekend this question is asked, and answered, by millions of people. And most often Friday and Saturday are what people are most interested in. But believe it or not, here in Madrid, Sunday is making a name for itself.

We know you might be wondering how a Sunday, the day of rest, could become part of the weekend update? Two words: Giggling Guiri.

The Giggling Guiri is one of the hottest English comedy clubs in the city, and their line up this season is off the charts hysterical! With comedians from Scotland, England, Ireland, Australia, and more, every act is completely unique, and five star funny.

Once a month at Sala Clamores, the Giggling Guiri puts on an amazing show. This Sunday, October 12th, 2008, Craig Hill, the famous Scottish comedian, known for his cheeky musical characterizations, will be back in Madrid and energetic as ever. His renditions of Shirley Bassey singing “Who Ate All The Pies” and Julie Andrews singing Punk songs made him an instant hit, and won him an award for the Comedy Stores “Stand Up for Hooch” competition of the year.

If his face looks familiar it’s because he was one of five stand-ups on BBC Scotland’s “Live Floor Show”. And after two series, he became part of the cast when the show went national. Haven’t seen him on television? Well maybe at the Edinburgh Fringe, where he debuted his solo show in 2000 and has since gone on to do a brand new show every year.

Since he exploded onto the scene in 1998, people have smiled and laughed more. Now do you see why Sundays are making a comeback? So tell us again, what are you doing this weekend?

*** Tickets will be 17 euros at the door. BUT, you can get a major discount for only 12 euros by sending an email to mail@comedyinspain.com before Saturday at 4pm. Put Mapoffer in the subject field and make sure to include the complete names of the people who would like a reservation. The reservation will be available at the door at 7:30pm. Valid ID is required.

Café De Los Signos

The most unique café to hit the scene in recent years, Café De Los Signos, caused a stir in Madrid by being the first café to cater to and be run by the deaf. However, it should be noted that all people regardless of their hearing status are more than welcome.

Entering this spacious cafe, one might not immediately notice any differences. An ample sound system provides background music to the ordinary murmur of café life.

However a second glance reveals evidence of deaf culture. Many but by no means all of the customers are communicating in sign language. Another notable detail is the single miniature light fixed to the front corner of every table; tapping it on allows you to get your servers attention. And by the way, communicating with the waiters, all of whom are deaf, is the same as at any foreign language restaurant – you simply smile and point at your chosen menu item. Less obvious is the fact the kitchen communicates with the waiters via pager-like vibrating devices. The television is, obviously, always running subtitles, but the function of the board games in the back is less clear. Perhaps they are to entertain the children, facilitate cross-cultural (sign to spoken) interaction, or simply because occasionally one does get the urge to play Scrabble.

As with most cafes, there is entertainment. The line up includes stand-up comedy, cuenta cuentos (story telling), and magic shows. And don’t worry, most performances come with verbal translators for the sign language impaired.

But enough about the differences, it’s obvious that the management understands that one thing we all have in common is the appreciation of good food. From curries to couscous, to pasta and salads, Café de Los Signos, serves up international cuisine at down-home prices (5.50 – 7.00 euros).
