Café Barbieri: Cafe/Venue
Bar reviews, Live Music — By admin on April 8, 2007 12:00 amEntering Café Barbieri transports you back to a time of high, baroque-detailed ceilings, red velvet curtains, and old-style jazz. Its dilapidated state assures you that it isn’t one of those new-fangled, turn-of-the-century-themed cafes. This is the real thing: just ask the old timers.
This ample space is filled with two to four person tables lending itself to an intimate atmosphere, but as one of Madrid’s most historical and popular cafes, at any given time this venue can fill to the rafters with people, quickly creating a charged and festive atmosphere.
The menu is light on food, gloriously heavy on drink. If you are in the mood for infusions, cafes or cocktails you’ll find them here – there are 13 types of chocolate drinks alone! The food is as modest as the drinks are excessive offering only a few classic tapas and raciones.
Hidden in the back is the cozy performance space, which has a ten-table seating capacity. In addition to the assurance of getting a good seat, it is also inexpensive – you are obligated to buy one drink and pay a meager four-euros cover.
