And, of course, we have some more suggestions to coast you through the weekend. Since it’s the festival of San Isidro the city will be crawling with art from symphonies to rock ’n’ roll to puppet theater...

It's only natural that my experience in Jazz Bar starts off on a great note, “Wow, 5.50 for a cocktail! Que Bueno!”
“That’s not all,” continues the bartender, “Since I’m from Colombia, I mix every...

Summertime is here again, and that means it's time for the Summer Case Festival! This year's festival will take place at the Boadilla del Monte in Madrid and the Parc del Forum in Barcelona.
As always, the entertainers set to perform do not disappoint. Indie newcomers the Long Blondes will make an appearance, as well as cult favorites, the Raveonettes and the always exciting Kings of Leon. The electronica set can look forward to the Japanese avant-garde blips and bleeps of Cornelius as well as club hero Tiga, M.I.A. and CSS's brand of electro-rock.
And all of you original punk rockers: ever expected to see the Sex Pistols or the Stranglers live onstage again? Well... it's summer, anything's possible.

For a band whose name that translates as “Boy and Gun”, Galecia-based rock band, Niño y Pistola, is surprisingly melodic. The quartet consists of two acoustic guitars, a bass, and a drum kit...

Indiscreetly spewing magenta spotlights at the northeast brink of the Parque del Oeste lies the Balcon de Rosales, a venue that definitely has its place in the hierarchy of Madrid club life. I arrived for Blue Riddim Drum & Bass...

Can’t agree with your sweetheart on some of those vital issues - like where to go on a Friday night? Two friends of mine, we’ll call them T and K, feel your pain. T likes to knock back his beers to punk/alternative music in hipster joints where people wear square-rim glasses and carry sketch books in their messenger bags. K loves hip hop and salsa while sucking...
More than twelve rooms of flamenco art cover the visual legacy of flamenco at the Reina Sofia. See the review.
Feel like getting twisted? Apparently everyone else does too. In the last two years, Club Twist has had to upgrade venues twice just to keep pace with the crazed crowds. It looks like Madrid was starving for a solid dose of drum and base. Now on their third venue...
Yet another drum addict! DJ Judge (Angel García) at Club Twist on Thursday night. See review for details.
Welcome back! Madrid’s international population dipped a bit during December as everyone flew here or there to do this or that. We truly hope your livers and your bank accounts survived the season. Ours did - more or less. Come on, what’s a bit of sclerosis and debt, it’s the f%&king holidays! Anyway, the elves at MAP were busy the whole while happily writing away. Here is a quick update. Spanish current events were...

Usually phrase is, “The problem won’t stop until they find a cure,” but, in the case of Robert Smith’s mythically depressive group, the opposite is more apt, “The Cure won’t stop until they find a problem.” These Kings...
For some people Sundays are a day of rest and going to church, but for the legions of club-heads here in Madrid it’s prime party time. Every Sunday afternoon, a faithful congregation of party enthusiasts comes to Macumba to experience the revered Space of Sound....
After seeing some solid big-name American bands play here in Madrid, I decided it was time to take in a local show. Escaping from the cold December night, I ducked in to Sala Juglar to catch Cira y Yo, a laid back Spanish folk/pop band originally from Badajoz, but now also spending quite a bit of time in Madrid. Turns out it was a good call. As my fellow concert goers steadily flowed into the cozy little venue, they were met with a smiling and tambourine bearing Cira and Ulises, wedged onto...
I entered the vestibule of the club a little after 1 AM wondering if it was, in fact, the much lauded flamenco club, Clan. Unconvinced, I quickly scanned for clues. I saw a medium sized bar with a chatty group warming the alcove. Stepping through the next set...
Just as you're getting ready to send off all of those thoughtful Christmas cards and gifts to the family back home, you spy the following shows - do you pay the postage or purchase the tickets? "Understated savvy" are the words that might best sum up this little bar that straddles the Chueca/Gran Via divide. Most bars fail by trying too hard or, conversely, hardly trying - the Underwood takes the middle ground. They don’t impose "sophistication" via exotic themes, nor do they leave you squinting under florescent lights ankle deep in wadded napkins. The bar simply creates a comfortable environment...
50 Cent is confident. It's easy to understand why, as this New York rapper, born Curtis Jackson, has had success ever since he stepped on the scene. His first commercially released album, 2003's “Get Rich or Die Trying”, sold over 1 million copies in the first full week. He was loved by fans, adored by the music press, and proclaimed...
If you are looking for a different sort of “communion” on Sundays, perhaps the Goa Party is it. On the 25th of November, from noon to midnight DJs will spin non-stop. Everyone from the uber-hip Ivan Smagghe to the modest Belgian guys of Spirit Catcher will take a set and do their best to rock your world. Come on! It finishes at midnight – you never get to bed before then anyway!...
A very wise man once said, “Never underestimate the restorative powers of jazz and cocktails”. OK, maybe no one has ever uttered exactly those words in exactly that order, but the point is - they should have. If you don’t know what I am talking about, get yourself to the The XXIV Festival de Jazz de Madrid. With over 14 clubs and countless performers participating, there is no reason to miss out. This year the festival is dedicated to the memory of...

The following will read like a crash course in Madrid culture. No matter what your concerns, questions or proclivities, we think you’ll be able to find something to suit your lifestyle in our medley of suggestions. Between the end of the 19th century and the middle of the 20th, Madrid’s favorite pastime - talking, talking, talking - was taken even more seriously than usual. Part of a proper bohemian life was engaging in tertulias, informal gatherings to chat about, of course, everything counter-cultural. The newly developed tradition of sitting down at a marble table...

Further proof that Retiro has something for everyone. As the children in the foreground playfully "Row, row, row their boats", the hippies in the background happily "Roll, roll, roll their joints". Weekends, both of the activities are in full swing. At the base of the horse monument, the masses gather to "drum circle" the day away. The broad, circular steps in at the center are ideal for people watching, chatting and catching some sun.
Hardly have the summer festivals finished when the fall excitement begins. Starting Monday, the 15th of October, and running until Sunday, the 18th of November, The Festival de Otoño presents a vast array of theater, dance, and music to insure that autumn is every bit as exciting as summer was. The agenda covers every possible point on the spectrum of performing arts from the high-energy modern circus of “Piratas, Piratas” to more traditional...
In conjunction with the “Fémina ‘07” festival, tonight there’s “Rimas Contra La Violencia de Genero" (Rap Against Domestic Violence) at Sala Caracol. All proceeds will go to the Funcación Mujeres. In the past, “Fémina” has showcased women performers of every region and genre imaginable including big names like Kodama, Venexxa, and Sara Da Pin Up...
It’s an age-old conundrum: should I languidly lie in bed or head out for a night of revelry? For many, too tired to go out but too restless to stay in, this constitutes a genuine conflict. Fortunately for the indecisive masses, there is now a brilliant compromise: a venue called “Lay Down” - or should that be “Lie Down”? Anyway, usage aside, this club/restaurant – provides an opportunity to do just that: relax in bed with friends while dining out and enjoying live performances and DJs...
Located on Calle Espiritu Santo 38 in barrio Malasaña, La Buena is a new, slightly confused, rock’n’ roll-y bar. I say confused because chandeliers, leaf wallpaper, and (what looks like) the Virgin Mary on their business cards, don’t exactly go hand in hand with the rock’n’roll groove...
The Rastro, Madrid’s largest outdoor market can only be described as “a universe unto itself”. With origins that stretch back nearly five centuries, one can only imagine the plentitude of traditions surrounding this massive Sunday event...

Although this week the magazine is full of “flamenco summits” and elegant evening art events, make no mistake about it - Madrid gets just as low brow as the next town. Malasaña is the “barrio” of all things uncivilized and “Garage Sónico” is the perfect point of entry...
This Saturday, you have just one more reason to stay up late. In fact, you’ll be regarded as a connoisseur and a cultural gourmet if you do: for the second year in a row, Madrid will turn itself into a living piece of art. A few years ago Paris came up with the idea of opening museums and organizing activities on a Saturday night, long after regular opening hours. It was such a success that every self-respecting big European city has its own version and in Madrid they named it Noche en Blanco...

Five days of free flamenco! That’s what the third annual “Cumbre de Flamenca” (Flamenco Summit) offers. All you have to do is get yourself to the uh... metro station, Chamartin. Ya, on one hand, performances on this scale don’t typically happen in the subway station, but, on the other hand, there is no more appropriate place considering this is a form which prides itself on being inextricably linked to the common people and folk traditions...
Alejandro Sanz, one of the première pop musicians in Spain, is playing on Wednesday night in the Plaza de Toros. In case you are a little foggy on who this guy is, check out this video . “No es lo mismo” won both the song and album of the year at the 2004 Latin Grammy Awards making it an anthem for many – especially those who are perilously drunk and stumbling around discos at three o’clock in the morning...
Although fan club meetings aren’t likely a major part of your weekly social calendar, maybe they should be. Don’t think screaming pre-pubescent girls staking out hotels where David Bisbal is rumored to be; instead, think hole-in-the-wall punk-rock pub where the owner has single-handedly canonized all members of the band, The Ramones...
The band leading the hip hop explosion in Morocco, H-Kayne, has arrived! They rock Sala Heineken tonight with a jamming mix of hip-hop beats and North African musical styles. In the tradition of this marginalized genre, their lyrics are making the powers-that-be uncomfortable with their frank treatment of such taboo issues as poverty, drugs and prostitution...
Never judge a man by his shadow, a ship by its paint, or a book by its cover - words of wisdom. In the case of “Via Láctea” (Milky Way), we might add: “…and don’t judge this joint by its entrance sign!” The airbrushed Disney-looking ode to tackiness hanging above the door features two vaguely alien-like sex kittens lying on a purple cloud gazing into the Milky Way. And what awaits you inside?...
Marula Café, named after an African fruit commonly eaten by elephants, has one of the best terrazas in Madrid - particularly because of its view. Situated on a corner right under the bridge of Calle Bailen (for the moment, we will ignore the fact that people commit suicide from this bridge), you get a view of gardens and the magnificent arch structure that supports the bridge...See other interesting links such as: Technorati Profile
The Hip-hop/rap artists from Zaragoza, Violadores del Verso (formerly known as "Doble V"), will be in concert in Madrid on September 15 at the Telefónica Arena Madrid. The concert is part of a promotional tour of their latest album- “Vivir Para Contarlo” (Live to Tell) that was released last year. This album hit the stands in 2006 after a five-year silence and sold over 40 million copies in 2 weeks...
So, when was the last time you heard someone spinning Steve Miller non-ironically? On the original vinyl? By the light of lava lamps? Been a long time? Maybe too long? Perhaps it’s time to get back in touch with your inner 70s groovster? Are you ready to blast to the past?
“Death to disco” seems to be the new mantra of an “extremist” group promoting punk rock culture. To this end they have organized a pair of concerts this weekend – Friday and Saturday.
Like all traditions, flamenco has a beautiful past to preserve and exciting frontiers to explore – the series revels in the tension between these two poles. But beyond this duality of old and new, the art itself is a miraculous blending of Andalusian, Islamic, Jewish, African, and Indian cultures.
Super sonic, a cozy space tastefully plastered with icons including David Bowie, The Libertines, Blondie and The Killers, strikes a perfect balance between a festive club and your best friend’s living room. Luis and Nacho a.k.a. “DJs Liquid Boy” and “Sweet Vicious”, the young, hipster owners, capitalize on this hominess by taking time to chat with people, learn their names and find out what they're into.
For those who like to go out in Madrid, your know the two best nights are Thursdays and Sundays, and the best hip hop/R&B party in Madrid, is at Serrano 41, Sunday night. The DJs spin the hottest R&B, hip-hop, and reggaeton that easily rivals any club stateside.
Runway lights welcome those who visit the newly opened Studio 54, one of the most stylish venues to have opened in the heart of Chueca recently. The ambiance makes everyone who enters feels likes an authentic star. The clothing designer, Tomás Alía, was responsible for the clubs decoration – noteworthy is his chic use of the color pink.
If Sala Siroco were shoes, it’d be a pair of converse: not the newest or most prestigious, but, without a doubt, a standard-setting underground classic. Like converse, the space is nice but not remarkable; however, it has an understated yet palpable hip-ness.
Just when you thought the weekends were safe… Code is taking the party to the next level with CODE Summer Festival. After throwing their famed monthly blow-outs here in Madrid, they’re going to redefine “summer festival” with 30 Djs, two dance zone, 14 hours of music, and 10,000 clubbers!
Stumbling around the neighborhoods of Madrid seldom let’s me down. The sheer quantity of side streets and the speed with which the establishments on them change keep me in a never-ending state of discovery. Gems are to be found. Such a find is the Teteria de las Indias Number Two - curious space if ever there was one.
We aren’t fibbin’ we are telling ya just like it is. There is no rest for the wicked this weekend because Spain is throwing yet another kickin' music festival – this time it is the big one: Festival Internacional de Benicàssim (FIB).
With Mega "Voltas" of Energy... Bjork, the crowed Princess of pop, hits Madrid Wednesday the 18th of July in all her techno-color splendor. For many, the new album, Volta, will harken back to the danc-ier days before her recent string of more introverted, serious-minded CDs. She describes it as being "techno" "extroverted" and "voodoo" with a central message of unity among all people. Bjork will perform on July 18th at the Plaza De Toros De Las Ventas.
Because some bad stupid person recently stole my camera, today we have a drawing in place of a photo. Notice the DJs at Casa Encendid are so good that it inspires people to grow tall and cars to float. Seriously, check it out!

If you are ready to leave the city-slicker side of Madrid and delve a little deeper into the barrios, Juglar could be the place for you – especially if you like your music on the soulful, funky, hip-hop side. Down in Lavapìes, the hotly disputed neighborhood (cool or dangerous?), El Juglar doesn’t immediately attract a lot of attention. The only thing that may catch your eye is the late-night crowds that gather in front of the bar on Friday and Saturday nights...
Any TV On The Radio fans out there? If you aren’t a fan yet, visiting this link might be a conversion experience for you. Sunrise is somewhat of an institution on the gay club circuit and deservedly so. The entrance is 8 euros with one free drink included. This tastefully decorated establishment hosts a long bar which divides the chatting area from the dancing area, and, of course, the dance area comes complete with a stage, large screen, and gyrating go-go boys...
If you’ve ever been so bored that you've found yourself staring at your aquarium wondering what it would be like to be inside, you may want to check out the new late-night discoteca in town, the Reina Bruja. In the best way possible, it may actually give you some insight into that aquarium...
Ice cream, short shorts, and glowing tans are all closely associated with summer and, of course, music festivals are one of the season’s most important rituals. Here is a prime example of "Hole in the wall".
