Weekend Parties in Madrid

Independance Club has got your weekend covered with back-to-back events this Thursday, Friday and Saturday (1/28-1/30).  Independance is one of Madrid’s best alternatives to the usual mix of pop, Spanish pop and electro that you find at most other late-night clubs.  This week they kick it off on Thursday with their “New Indie Night”, featuring a mix of DJs who will be throwing down the latest music in the indie-rock scene.  This is followed by Friday’s “Flower Power Party” that promises to bring back the spirit of the 60s and 70s, spinning the best music from that  period.  The weekend continues on Saturday with the “Arctic Monkeys Pre-Party”. Experience the music of the Arctic Monkeys before they make their way to Palacio Vistalegre on the 5th of February.

If you get there on Thursday before 2:30 a.m. two drinks are included in the 10 euros cover charge. If you arrive after 2:30 a.m. one drink is included with the cover. Don’t forget this is a late night spot so their doors don’t open until 12:00 a.m.  For more info check out their webpage.

More Original Version Movies Madrid

Coming to your local VO movie houses here in Madrid this Friday, January 29th, will be a dose of Oscar preview flicks.  Two of today’s greatest actors, Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon, team up to tell the story of a South African rugby star (Damon) and Nelson Mandela (Morgan) who inspires his country.  The timeless Clint Eastwood directs Invictus, a movie primed to garner several Oscar nods.

If you haven’t already noticed there are two more big-time movies just trickling into theatres here: Up in the Air and Nine. In Up in the Air George Clooney and Vera Farmiga deliver two of the year’s best performances in the story of the highs and lows of corporate culture.  Nine is full of music, music, and more music and features some of Hollywood’s greatest female actresses, including Spain’s own Penelope Cruz.

As always, show times and theatres can be found at Cines Ideal and Renoir Cines.

A Slice of Italy in Madrid at La Vita é Bella

Wish there were a place to go for a meal in Madrid that offered take-out service and authentic Italian dishes made from the freshest ingredients. Well, look no further than La Vita é Bella.

Stepping into La Vita é Bella is like being inside a bustling coffee shop in Italy. The décor is minimal with few tables and bar stools. The reasonably priced food and variety of options make this spot perfect for a quick mid-day snack or a relaxing dinner at a nearby plaza or park. All locations offer mouth-watering pizza, pasta and stromboli. While the place is normally packed with tourists, students, and locals, the staff is efficient and thorough. There are tables to sit and enjoy your meal but only a few, so be prepared to wait or take your food on the road.

What to order:  The Malasaña pizza is a must: A delicious combination of tomato, mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes, pesto, arugula, and fresh Parmesan. The menu offers fifteen thin-crust pizzas that have both meat and vegetarian options. Pizza comes in one-size only, which can feed two people or one, depending on how hungry you are.
